ETHAN FROME Liam Neeson, Patricia Arquette (1993, Touchstone, PG, $94.95) Edith Wharton's unbearably sad and ironic novella, tracing the tragedy of a tortured, working-class man (Neeson) shunned by his New England village, is given decent enough treatment here. The performances, especially that of Joan Allen as Frome's hypochondriacal wife, are fine, and the film captures the book's physically and emotionally wintry landscape. C+ -LO'T
