MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY (PG) Successful lightweight Woody Allen-no more, no less. Allen and Diane Keaton are Larry and Carol Lipton, an Upper East Side couple who have been married for more than 20 years. When their neighbor dies of a heart attack, they begin to investigate her husband (Jerry Adler), who they believe killed her. The movie is clever and absorbing, with one wild Hitchcockian twist; it's both a genuine thriller and a cheeky goof on thrillers. Allen and Keaton make an endearing comic team, as if Alvy Singer and Annie Hall had gotten married and outgrown their shrinks. Alan Alda and Anjelica Huston play the Liptons' romantic rivals, and whenever they show up, Manhattan Murder Mystery threatens to turn into a warmed-over Woody Allen $ relationship movie. At its best, though, the film shows Woody rediscovering the art of fun. B ( 184, Aug. 20) -OG
