SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER (PG) An egghead Karate Kid, this is also a delicate and touching drama that takes us deep inside the eccentric competitive mystique of grandmaster chess. Seven-year-old Josh Waitzkin (Max Pomeranc) is a chess prodigy, maybe even a genius. His parents (Joe Mantegna and Joan Allen) are in awe of his gift, and also a little frightened by it. Can Josh hone his mastery without disappearing into his own mind, the way the legendary Bobby Fischer did? The chess matches have a thrilling physicality, especially when Josh faces down Vinnie (Laurence Fishburne), a speed-chess hipster who sits all day long in New York's Washington Square Park.
