BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Jean Marais, Josette Day (1946, Home Vision, NR, $24.95) Jean Cocteau's version of this durable fairy tale occurs in a place of childlike imagination where everything-from a magical white horse to disembodied hands holding candelabra-goes unquestioned. The remastered soundtrack still retains a bit of hiss and crackle, but there is some improvement, especially noticeable in the marvelous score by Georges Auric. The most wondrous creation of all, of course, is the beast, played by Jean Marais, who gives the film a mysteriously erotic charge that takes the fable into decidedly adult territory. A
