'WARS' RAGE ON

As impressive as The Definitive Collection may be, the really definitive collection of Star Wars movies is still in the works. George Lucas has quietly announced plans to turn out three Star Wars feature-movie prequels (the first movies picked up the saga in the middle) between 1995 and 2000. Over the last decade, Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic effects company has been refining digital-image ''compositing'' technology to allow new levels of visual verisimilitude. (The computer-generated dinos in Jurassic Park were the most dramatic step to date in that direction.) As for the films' story lines, only vague outlines exist. But they'll follow a young Ben Kenobi and Luke's father, Anakin Skywalker, from their days as friends and fellow Jedi knights. And will a proposed third trilogy of sequels, detailing the Empire's dismantlement, happen early in the 21st century? Said Lucas recently: ''I'm not sure I'll live that long.''
