IN THE SOUP Steve Buscemi, Jennifer Beals (1993, Academy, R, color and B&W, $89.95) The Sundance Film Festival judges might have sucked in a bit too much thin Utah mountain air when they awarded this stylistically derivative, unfunny little comedy the 1992 Grand Jury Prize. Buscemi plays a down-and-out, not-too-bright East Village filmmaker whose dreams almost come true when an irresistible crook (the very resistible Seymour Cassel) agrees to finance his movie. Cameo appearances by Carol Kane and Jim Jarmusch hint at director Alexandre Rockwell's avant-garde intentions, but this utterly conventional flick lacks narrative drive, and worse, any conviction.
