The kids are all right-well, some of them, anyway. Pint-size powerhouse Macaulay Culkin, for example. Despite lukewarm reviews, The Good Son, Culkin's & R-rated bad-seed thriller, garnered $12.5 million to become Twentieth Century Fox's biggest fall opener ever, beating out the studio's previous record holder, 1992's Last of the Mohicans. Son surprised Fox by appealing to audiences of various ages and ethnic backgrounds, living everywhere from Times Square to Tacoma. On the flip side is the independent '70s teencom Dazed and Confused. Critics' raves were largely disregarded as Dazed, hindered by a lack of big- name stars, drew modestly and finished 13th. Still, the film's good word of mouth may carry it through the fall rush.
