Lead Performance: Yo La Tengo
B+

Yo La Tengo Painful (Matador/Atlantic) The group's latest incarnation seems to bear a close resemblance to British dream poppers like Lush: Guitars, voices, and keyboards shimmer and glide atop pastoral melodies that get under your skin and do nice things. But there's a subversive mind at work here, and if the Dylanesque titles (''From a Motel 6'') and Stones references don't remind you that there's a former rock critic at the helm, Ira Kaplan's angular guitar shadings will.
