There's good news for almost everyone in the ratings for late-night, evening news, and early-morning shows (regular Nielsen prime-time ratings were unavailable at press time). CBS can celebrate David Letterman's emergence as the late-night champ, proving wrong those who gave Jay Leno's Tonight Show the advantage because Letterman's Late Show is delayed until 12:05 a.m. by about 30 percent of CBS affiliates. (Meanwhile, Letterman's Late Night replacement at NBC, Conan O'Brien, isn't matching Dave's old numbers in that slot.)
ABC can point proudly to the continued dominance of Peter Jennings' World News Tonight. Despite the addition of Connie Chung, the CBS Evening News remains in a second-place tie with Tom Brokaw's NBC Nightly News. And NBC can rejoice that Today continues its tight race with ABC's Good Morning America for first place among early birds (and among early, early birds, NBC News at Sunrise has a slight edge). The only network with nothing to brag about is Fox, which doesn't field a national early-morning or evening newscast, and which continues to see its late-night Chevy Chase Show do a ratings free fall.
