In the New York of the future, uniformed youths patrol trash-strewn streets, helping cops round up disease victims, who are then quarantined in hell-hole prison camps. Elsewhere in the wasteland, a teenage girl (Kelly) discovers love -- and a purpose -- with the leader (Gooding) of a ragtag rebel group. Their desperate romance helps relieve the grimness of this cautionary tale. Yet the movie's real strength is its unblinking vision of an all-too-imaginable future.
