Michael Martin Murphey Cowboy Songs III: Rhymes of the Renegades (Warner Western) As a documentarian of working cowboys and ranchers, Murphey has had such a sure foot on the cowpoke trail that it's hard to believe this misstep, a deeply flawed collection of original and traditional songs about Wild West outlaws. Murphey says he wanted to go beyond the silver-screen myths of Billy the Kid, but his giddy melodies and arrangements are too Hollywood for Clint Eastwood. C- -AN
