Lead Performance: Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares; Genre: Folk

Specializing in adventurous, often playful folk/world music, the Bulgarian women's choir show off their crystalline voices on a two-hour concert set. The high points are stunning: The sudden jump from strident bellow to intimate whisper on ''Dragana i slavei (Dragana and the Nightingale)'' chills you like a tap on your shoulder in a dark room. Although the ladies' brassy tone may wear on the ears, this is further proof that choral music needn't be stuffy to be dramatic.
