Lead Performance: Andy Laverne; Genre: Jazz

Andy LaVerne Maybeck Recital Series, Volume Twenty-Eight (Concord Jazz) Double Standard (Triloka) Veteran pianist LaVerne finally comes out on his own and comes of age as a player well worth checking out. Boasting both mainstream jazz fluency and a tendency to redecorate the musical landscape as he goes, LaVerne reexamines and coaxes new meaning from chestnuts like ''Moonlight in Vermont.'' Double Standard is all about standards, but playing wth a quartet, he shamelessly and inventively reshuffles them. Saxophonist Billy Drewes breathes a fragile emotionality into the sometimes cerebral atmosphere. Maybeck: B+ Double Standard: B+ -Josef Woodard
