THE BEST INTENTIONS Pernila August, Max von Sydow (Academy, unrated, $89.95) The script, by Ingmar Bergman, tells of the painful process his own parents went through in marrying against the wishes of his mother's family. There are typical Bergman lines like ''Aren't you afraid of death?'' and long, deep, troubled discussions about being in this vale of tears. But Bergman's writing is so personal and idiosyncratic that, despite the best intentions, in the hands of director Billie August, the movie edges dangerously close to parody. C+ -LO'T
