THE AMBULANCE Eric Roberts, Janine Turner (1990, Columbia TriStar, R, $94.95) A mysterious ambulance is cruising the streets of New York, picking up people who are never heard from again. When it snatches pedestrian Turner, witness Roberts gets involved, eventually uncovering a black-market network dealing in human guinea pigs. Directed by shockmeister Larry Cohen (It's Alive, The Stuff), this thriller becomes increasingly bizarre. But even its most precarious plot turns are balanced by a knowing sense of humor. An offbeat cast including James Earl Jones and Red Buttons colorfully embellishes this straight-to-video sleeper. B -MS
