Lead Performance: Tom Waits
--
After blowing out his voice in the '70s, Waits has evolved from unctuous beatnik barfly to auteur-as-sideshow, bellowing hyper-noir tales of woe. This album, culled from compositions for a German musical (in collaboration with Robert Wilson and William Burroughs), showcases his penchant for disturbing mood music and grotesque sentiment. Too bad Burroughs' cameo vocal appearance is a flop.
