Here's a little nugget for the TV trivia books: CBS canceled its new private- eye drama, South of Sunset, after airing just one episode. The last time a series ended after one airing was in 1969, when ABC pulled the plug on the Laugh-In rip-off Turn-On. The prognosis is pretty grim for the week's other new CBS series, as well: Dick Van Dyke's detective drama, Diagnosis Murder, came in 65th. Halloween gave Fox cause for cheer: The network's two-hour Simpsons spook- athon drew about 20 million viewers. ABC tasted a treat too-NYPD Blue climbed from 21st place to 17th.
