The first thing that grabs you in So Tonight That I Might See is the drowsy, hypnotic pull of Hope Sandoval's sparse, longing voice. Coupled with the lonesome wail of David Roback's guitar, she sketches songs of wasted, desperate beauty, blending the trippy, atmospheric quality of the Doors with the bluesy twang of the Cowboy Junkies. Some may liken Mazzy Star to aural Valium, but artificial melancholy was never this sweet, or this thrilling. A
