The cryptic correspondence between Griffin and Sabine concludes (rather open- endedly) in The Golden Mean, the final installmant in Nick Bantock's quirky trilogy. (In these odd little volumes, readers actually open and peruse the characters' letters to each other.) The first book, Griffin & Sabine-a surprise best-seller back in 1991-has some 870,000 copies in print, while the second, Sabine's Notebook, has done nearly as well. The Golden Mean, already at 700,000 in its second printing, appears at No. 10 this week.
