Though the studios launched some big holiday films even before Thanksgiving in order to grab a heftier slice of the lucrative Christmas pie, the strategy backfired this year: Most moviegoers went shopping instead. This weekend's box office take was down 24 percent from that of a year ago. Only Mrs. Doubtfire pulled big crowds, proving that good word of mouth on a Robin Williams comedy will beat bad reviews. Meanwhile, the sequel Addams Family Values lost more than two thirds of its audience from its opening two weeks ago. And when a film starts out early in the season and skids so soon, chances are it won't last into the new year. WEEKEND TOP 20 GROSS WEEKS IN GROSS* TO DATE RELEASE
