A special hour-long Christmas edition of Dream On is, I'm afraid, as uneven as the rest of the series has been this season. But it's well worth watching for its best subplot: Judith (Wendie Malick) has her baby, with Martin (Brian Benben)-our hero, her ex-husband-assisting. Going into labor at an inopportune time is an idea that has been used for TV laughs at least as far back as Lucy and Desi, but Malick in particular is in spectacular form here. Cranky, imperious, sarcastic, and lovely, her Judith has become a completely original comic creation that has never been more cannily deployed than in this script, by series cocreators Marta Kauffman and David Crane. This episode also features two solid, extremely discreet cameo appearances by Marion Ross (Happy Days) as a grim Irish nun and Family Matters' Reginald VelJohnson as...well, see if you can figure out who VelJohnson is. Fooled me. B+
