Landscape in the Mist

In Theo Angelopoulos' road movie-a contemporary, dreamlike variation on The Odyssey-an adolescent Greek girl (Palaiologou) and her little brother (Zeka) make their way to Germany to find a father they have heard about but never met. In Landscape in the Mist, the journey of these babes in the woods is heartrending, as plaintive as the sound of an oboe, yet rigorously unsentimental. The world-shown in a series of astonishingly original and disturbing images-is seen from the point of view of the children as the strange and unexpected place it surely is. A profound and deeply affecting work. A+
