(Oh Boy) Take a Southern egghead guitar band, throw in a dash of Devo and Frank Zappa, add a pinch of Richard Thompson, and you get the delightfully off-kilter Bis-quits and their self-titled album, The Bis-quits. Wavering from genius (''Yo Yo Ma,'' a tribute to the cellist via Chuck Berry) to perhaps too-out-there (the high-tech space noodling of ''Cyberpop''), they are nonetheless worth the dough and rising. B+
