The very thing that's memorable about the tone of ''Six Degrees'' on stage and screen -- the fast-paced, controlled ramblings of the characters -- is what makes this a difficult read for those used to seeing plays: It's hard to train the eye to move along at the speed of voices. Reprinted to coincide with the film version, ''Six Degrees'' is the work of a gifted playwright, but this might be a case where it's best to see the movie and skip the book.
