Little, Brown had hoped that The Hope, Herman Wouk's long-awaited saga about modern-day Israel's founding, would be a big book this winter. Seems Santa has been good to the publisher: The whole 450,000-copy first printing has been shipped to stores and a new batch of 30,000 is on its way. Wouk, the author of such high-soap-quotient historicals as The Winds of War and War and Remembrance, here gives us a sort of Love Under the Mortar Fire, a tale of four Israeli army officers and the women they love. The Hope appears at No. 8 this week.
