In the day-after-tomorrow megalopolis of Empire, identical twins Henry and Freddy unknowingly live parallel lives in Equinox. One's a rising gangster, one's a shy garage mechanic, and both are played by Modine with his hallmark seething thoughtfulness. Surrounding him are writer-director Alan Rudolph's usual dreamers, here played by Tomei, Lara Flynn Boyle, Tyra Ferrell, Lori Singer, and Fred Ward. Rudolph-a longtime Robert Altman protege-continues to specialize in a mood of poetic hothouse yearning that some find intensely moving and others unwatchably pretentious. We're fans; you may want to rent this just to find out where you stand. B-
