Ellis Island: An Illustrated History of the Immigrant Experience (1991)

Details Writers: Fred Wasserman, Ivan Chermayeff, Mary J. Shapiro; Genres: Coffee Table, History; Publisher: MacMillan

As an accompaniment to the quintessential American museum, the one at Ellis Island that documents the experience of over 12 million immigrants who came to this country by way of the government facility there, the authors have assembled oral histories, artifacts, photographs, and other documents primarily from the period between 1880 and 1924. Ellis Island: An Illustrated History of the Immigrant Experience is not as overwhelming as a visit to the site, but a handsome companion nonetheless. B+
