PAULA ABDUL CAPTIVATED: THE VIDEO COMPILATION '91 This latest compilation of Paula Abdul videos is an enlightening compendium of the joys and sorrows of state-of-the-art show biz. ''Opposites Attract,'' featuring Abdul's pas de deux with animated homefeline Skat Kat, is terrific fun, updating the Gene Kelly-Jerry mouse number from Anchors Aweigh with Roger Rabbit slickness. In contrast, the ill-advised re-creation of Rebel Without a Cause (featuring Keanu Reeves in the James Dean part) in ''Rush'' is presented with a nonmusical prologue, wherein Abdul proves she's no Natalie Wood.
Then there's the giddy eye candy of ''The Promise of a New Day,'' in which Abdul gets to have it both ways, romping in an orange bra that accentuates her va-va-voom appeal while slimming, anamorphic lenses tame her tendency to chunkiness. Abdul introduces each clip, stating early on that the video-making process has lost some of its charm for her-not the kind of admission you'd expect from this MTV success story. B-
