RED SORGHUM Gong Li, Jiang Wen (1987, New Yorker, $79.95, unrated) Like an abbreviated Asian 1900, this Berlin Film Festival winner documents life at a Chinese winery until its violent takeover by Japanese troops. This letterboxed edition preserves the epic's wide-screen grandeur, but its unhurried pace might discourage less-than-adventurous viewers. B -Doug Brod
