It's clear by now that the appetite for films about inner-city black life is no passing fancy. Like New Jack City and Boyz N the Hood, Ernest Dickerson's Juice came on strong at the box office, squeezing out a terrific $7,425 per- screen average over the extended Martin Luther King Day weekend. Even Juice, though, couldn't unseat The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, which insiders now say is on its way to a gross of $60 million. Grand Canyon held up nicely while expanding its run to 803 screens, and JFK, buoyed by the most intense media coverage given to any movie in years, is now on the verge of major-hit status. The same can't be said for Freejack and Kuffs, both of which will be lucky to squeak into the black. WEEKEND TOP TEN GROSS WEEKS IN GROSS* TO DATE RELEASE
