The music charts aren't the only ones on which country singer Garth Brooks has made a home in the top 10. On Jan. 17, Brooks' showcase on NBC drew more than 28 million viewers, giving the network its best showing in the 9 p.m. Friday slot in five years. It's hard not to read Brooks' triumph as a changing of the guard; an hour before his show, the CBS special Michael Jackson The Legend Continues ranked just 66th. But CBS' Friday wasn't all bad; despite Garth and the season's worst reviews, Tequila and Bonetti placed a strong 40th.

Second-place NBC is trying to bolster its ratings by shuffling its hits, with mixed results. On Jan. 15, Seinfeld beat ABC's Doogie Howser, M.D. for the first time since moving to 9 p.m. But Law & Order, now on Tuesdays at 9, is struggling against ABC's Roseanne; on Jan. 14, the drama fell to 55th, from 31st the previous week.
