It was, to say the least, and excellent opening. Wayne's World took in a socko $18.1 million over the extended President's Day weekend, earning a CinemaScore grade of A- in the bargain. The grosses were something of a vindication for Paramount Pictures chairman Brandon Tartikoff, who stumbled out of the gate with last year's less-than-successful All I Want For Christmas. With Wayne, his much-vaunted strategy of keeping costs down and mining concepts from television appears to be paying off. Speaking of comebacks, Disney, with this week's rerelease of The Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective, currently has five-count 'em-pictures in the top 10. So much for reports that the studio is in a rut. WEEKEND TOP TEN GROSS WEEKS IN GROSS* TO DATE RELEASE
