Duhrer's Animals (1992)

The furry, finned, and feathered creatures drawn so exuberantly and carefully by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) constitute the artist's finest work and have inspired Dührer's Animals, a book that is easily equal to their charms. Eisler's text wears its impressive scholarship lightly enough to engage any reader in the work of the man described here as ''a new Noah. Filling a richly varied ark, crowding it with all the wonders of nature and fantasy.'' A
