A Simple Story (1992)

In this updated ''woman's picture,'' which proves they could make 'em just as banal a dozen years ago as they did way back when, the charismatic Romy Schneider plays a woman who leaves her lover after having an abortion, then begins an affair with her ex-husband. Eventually the guilty Marie redeems her abortion by getting pregnant again with her ex, though it seems she's had a plot resolution rather than a child. There's nothing wrong with A Simple Story that a few interesting characters couldn't cure — everyone's so nice, decent, and dull. And it is all very simple: Woman gets baby, woman loses baby, woman gets baby again. For the maternally prone only, on a particularly lonely evening. C
