Proving that sex does sell-and that there really is no such thing as bad publicity-Basic Instinct had the second biggest opening of any film this year (right behind Wayne's World), earning a steamy $15.1 million and a CinemaScore grade of B+. The film has the makings of a major hit, but it will take at least another week to see if Instinct can keep generating controversy, media coverage, and big grosses. Word of mouth on My Cousin Vinny seems promising: The comedy held up nicely in its second week. Two other films weren't as fortunate: Noises Off failed to chart (despite a CinemaScore grade of A-), and Woody Allen's Shadows and Fog, playing on only 288 screens, had a gloomy $3,859 per-screen average.
