Maxwell's cultivated relationship with bankers had always been his specialty. Unlike other business people, they usually form a discreet fraternity around their customers' affairs and they are eager to encourage their clients to increasingly ambitious bids. Equally, Maxwell, understanding the bankers' individual ambition and vanity, sought to cultivate those whom he judged susceptible to his requirements. There would be requests that the young banker be allowed to travel with Maxwell to negotiate deals in foreign countries where the Lady Ghislaine would be moored, the helicopter stationed and entertainment provided suitable for a Hollywood mogul. ''It was all like a James Bond movie,'' recounted an awed financier who recalled the huge bowl of caviar on the yacht's dining table. ''A gift from Gorbachev,'' said his client, and there was no inclination to disbelieve the tale.
