Each of these apparently formal photographs of English society is accompanied by a few words meant to speak for or about the people and places pictured. Although the individuals posed here in Marks of Distinction with their well-appointed clubs or homes appear to lack all irony about privilege, the combination of picture and text supplies plenty of it. Knorr, who was raised in Puerto Rico, is especially amusing about the ways in which people are confined by oppressive good taste. B+
