If a few familiar titles seem to keep topping the chart, that may be for want of competition. Basic Instinct, Beethoven, and White Men Can't Jump continued to rule this week, but mostly because the majority of new openings were too feeble to make the top 10. The undercover suspenser White Sands dribbled in at No. 4, with a $3.1 million gross. But the week's other openings included the family comedy Passed Away (No. 13, $1.5 million) and the romantic thriller Year of the Comet (No. 17, $1.3 million). Each new release received a B- from audiences polled by CinemaScore. Why so many lackluster performers? The weeks before Memorial Day are traditionally a time when the studios unload their weaker films, clearing the decks for the blockbusters to come.
