FAR AND AWAY (PG-13) In Ron Howard's glossily old-fashioned immigrant saga, Tom Cruise plays a young tenant farmer who escapes the cruel confines of his Irish village and journeys to America, lured by the promise of freedom and land. His unlikely partner is an upper-crust Irish girl (Nicole Kidman) who decides she's had it up to her starched collar with life in the family mansion. The movie looks like an epic (much of the photography has a dazzling hyperclarity), only it lacks flavor and texture; the story is so predigested there's nothing left to chew on. Though Cruise doesn't do anything terribly wrong, he's limited as an actor by the very free-gliding confidence that makes him a star. C
