Immaculate Projection

Disney invited a large group of sisters — the religious kind — from all over New York City for a screening of Sister Act, starring Whoopi Goldberg as a lounge singer who hides out in a convent. Publicity stunt aside, 300 bona fide nuns showed up, seemingly shy but full of merriment after a few diet Cokes. ''Oh, God!'' was a frequent utterance during the film. And one doubled-over nun was laughing so hard she said, ''I think I'm going to throw up.'' At movie's end, one sister attested, ''Nuns love people, and that showed on screen.''
