There's one sure way to communicate the message that environmentalism is good: Show that people who hurt the environment are bad. Combining black hats and green consciousness, a growing number of videos with youth appeal feature villains who are enemies of the earth:
The Rescuers Down Under
Villain: Hulking poacher McLeach. Treachery: Ensnares a rare eagle for
profit; holds kangaroos, koalas, and other animals captive for their
skins. Resolution: McLeach is pushed into a river full of crocodiles,
then goes over a waterfall; brave mice save the eagle.
It Zwibble: Earthday Birthday
Villain: Garbage-loving Queen of the Dump. Treachery: Her minions litter a stream and misdirect invitations to an Earth Day party thrown by dinosaurs. Resolution: Magic dust brings children to the celebration; Queen craves more
garbage in which to wallow.
The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear
Villain: Oil company magnate Quentin
Hapsburg. Treachery: Kidnaps a prominent scientist scheduled to
deliver a pro-energy-efficiency policy speech and replaces him with
an evil doppelgänger. Resolution: Hapsburg falls out a window and is
mauled on the sidewalk by a lion; real scientist gives his speech.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of Ooze
Villain: Shredder. Treachery: Uses toxic waste to mutate wolf
and snapping turtle into monsters to destroy hero turtles; threatens
to use ooze for future mutations. Resolution: Shredder becomes huge
after ingesting a vial of the substance, but he's killed while
fighting the heroes.
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Villain: General Chang, chief Klingon warmonger. Treachery: He symbolizes the Klingons' contempt for their
environment, which leads to ozone layer depletion and subsequent
destruction of power-generating moon, Praxis. Resolution: Chang is
phaser-blasted away in battle with the Enterprise.
