Video Review

Kuffs

EW's GRADE
D+

Details Rated: PG-13; Genres: Action/Adventure, Comedy, Disaster; With: Tony Goldwyn and Christian Slater; Distributor: MCA/Universal Home Video

In Kuffs, a witless buddy-cop movie, every major scene plays like a music video. More annoyingly, Christian Slater's rookie character talks directly to the camera to move along the pitiful plot about the cleanup of a lawless section of San Francisco. Having an actor address the camera (Steve Martin in Father of the Bride is another impoverished example) seems more intrusive on home video — as if your TV set itself is talking to you. Subversive-faced Slater will please only his most die-hard fans, and poor Tony Goldwyn as his sidekick is asked to make a fool of himself. Come to think of it, so is the renter of this video. D+
