In Kuffs, a witless buddy-cop movie, every major scene plays like a music video. More annoyingly, Christian Slater's rookie character talks directly to the camera to move along the pitiful plot about the cleanup of a lawless section of San Francisco. Having an actor address the camera (Steve Martin in Father of the Bride is another impoverished example) seems more intrusive on home video as if your TV set itself is talking to you. Subversive-faced Slater will please only his most die-hard fans, and poor Tony Goldwyn as his sidekick is asked to make a fool of himself. Come to think of it, so is the renter of this video. D+
