The Residents: Twenty Twisted Questions (1992)

Since 1972, San Francisco's the Residents have been to rock & roll what David Lynch is to TV: Dada pranksters in a pop medium. Whether deconstructing Wilson Pickett's ''Land of 1,000 Dances'' while wearing KKK robes made of newspapers or creating a chaotic rock trilogy (in four parts) narrated by a pre-Teller Penn Gillette, the anonymous Residents have never failed to baffle, tantalize, annoy, and delight. Because their career is so conceptually sprawling, though, The Residents: Twenty Twisted Questions, an hour-long laserdisc overview, can't help but skip along the surface. All the group's videos are here, including a supremely weird take on James Brown's ''It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World'' (did MTV really air this?), but brief in-concert sequences are over before you're oriented (or suitably disoriented). Despite the fancy laser trappings, Questions is for undiscriminating fans only: It's the high-tech version of a souvenir T-shirt. C+
