Shakes the Clown (1992)

EW's GRADE
D-

Details Rated: R; Genres: Comedy, Crime; With: Julie Brown and Bobcat Goldthwait; Distributor: Columbia Tri-Star Home Video

What could be more obnoxious than a movie starring Bobcat Goldthwait? How about one that he also wrote and directed? In his debut as an auteur wannabe, Goldthwait plays Shakes: an angry young clown who performs at kiddie parties, gets blotto with his clowning colleagues, and bashes sidewalk mimes to blow off steam. Presumably meant as a black comic ode to subcultural misfits, Shakes the Clown is a tasteless wallow that takes inordinate pleasure in urination, vomiting, and other such indelicacies. Briefly released in theaters last spring, it may attract a cult following on video. Let's hope not. This is a movie only a sick bozo could love. D-
