L.A. THRIFT SHOPPING

IF YOU''RE in Los Angeles and you want to get a whiff of Johnny Depp by trying on his clothes, or see how it feels to stand in Cher's shoes, or buy your boyfriend the pair of black silk boxer shorts Michael Douglas wore in Basic Instinct, here are some of the best places to shop : CINEMA GLAMOUR SHOP This musty thrift shop, next door to the Bob Hope Clinic and down the street from the trendy eatery City, was started in the '60s by the mothers of Blake Edwards and Jill St.John to give Hollywood extras a place to shop for clothing they couldn't otherwise afford. By selling off wardrobes from the estates of such stars as Cary Grant and Natalie Wood, this very old- Hollywood store has donated almost $3 million to the Motion Picture and Television Fund. Recently, amid the racks of run-of-the-mill cast-off clothes, we spotted two Elizabeth Taylor dresses, a Ferragamo sweater from Mrs. Don Rickles, and, out of Mrs.Bob Newhart's closet, a Gucci suit. 343 N. LaBrea Avenue, Los Angeles, Calif.90036;213-933-5289

STAR WARES ON MAIN Having just worked out an exclusive deal with Paramount Studios, this celebrity-clothing store by the sea will soon sell neat old costumes like Robin Williams' alien suit from Mork & Mindy and items from the original Star Trek T.V. show. If you want a particular costume, you can put it in order. Otherwise, there's lots to choose from, including Madonna's long coat from the '' oh, Father '' segment of Truth or Dare ($6,500), Arnold Schwarzenegger's leather jacket from The Terminator($4,000), and one of Magic Johnson's numbered L.A. Lakers jerseys($2,000). There's even a pair of khakis once owned by Farrah Fawcett($30), a fact that prompted one young male customer to do a little dance and ask, very hopefully, '' Are they dirty ?'' 2817 Main Street, Santa Monica, Calif.90405; 310-399-0224

A STAR IS WORN Shoppers may have to search a bit through the old threads thrown out by the less-than-lustrous to find a real gem at this store, but they are here : the dress Shirley MacLaine wore in the famous rooftop scene in The Turning Point ($1,500); a red quilted vest Shirley Temple wore in Heidi ($3,000); one of Ginger Rogers' skirts ($700). More than 600 people consign clothes to this slightly tacky thrift shop, including Joni Mitchell, Anjelica Huston, Tom Cruise, Shelley Long, and Victoria Principal. 7303 Melrose avenue, Los Angeles, Calif.90046;213-939-4922

WESTERN COSUTME CO. You can't buy one of the 3 or 4 million costumes that hang in Western Costume's 125,000-squarefoot warehouse, but you can rent one. This is the company (founded in 1912) that made Dorothy's magical ruby slippers and the emerald-colored dress that Scarlett O'Hara fashioned out of Tara's old curtains. If you want exact replicas of the slippers, you can have them-for $5,000. Otherwise, you'll have to look through shoe sections that are marked ''Sandals-Ethnic/Egypt Biblical,'' or ''Home slippers,'' or ''WAC oxfords,'' or ''Boots 1970s,'' and match them up with costumes, categorized by era, that Western Costume made and rented to television and film studios.11041 Vanowen Street,North Hollywood, Calif.91605;818-760-0900.
