She wanted it bad. He didn't. The temperature may be rising on Melrose Place, but sorry, ''it'' is not what you think. What we mean is: From the moment auditions began for the 90210 spin-off, Courtney Thorne-Smith had her heart set on the part of Alison. As for Andrew Shue, well, he thought he could take the part of Billy-or leave it. Good thing he took it; Alison and Billy's frisky relationship as Melrose roomies has made their apartment the hottest on the lot-despite the fact that sex between them is strictly in their dreams for now. So far, Thorne-Smith, 24, who played Harry Hamlin's short-skirted Laker Girl-friend on L.A. Law, has been outfitted in Melrose's most conservative clothes-and thus must get across with personality what the others can with their Lycra-clad bods. Her level-headed Alison must support her Melrose-mates as they whine endlessly about problems. ''My mom called me one night,'' says Thorne-Smith, ''and said, 'Honey, you're so-o-o codependent on this show.''' Before Melrose, Shue, 25, was depending on a lead role in the cops-and- robbers drama Gulf City, but it didn't make Fox's lineup. ''Everyone was telling me how great it would be to be on Melrose Place,'' he says, ''and I'm thinking, 'It's a soap opera.' I wanted Gulf City. I didn't know this was going to be a big deal.'' When he auditioned in producer Aaron Spelling's home, however, Shue recalls looking over ''and (Courtney) was wearing these tight black jeans. The first thing out of my mouth was, 'This isn't going to be tough.''' Thorne-Smith laughs at this flirtatious admission. ''Andrew tells me he only teases me because he likes me,'' she says, ''so I guess when he pulls my hair I should be really excited.''
