In Between (1992)

EW's GRADE
D

Details Movie Rated: PG-13; Genres: Comedy, Drama; With: Robert Forster, Ginger Lynn Allen and Wings Hauser; Distributor: Monarch

Two more classics from the busiest actor in made-for-video movies, Wings Hauser. In the amateurish Mind, Body & Soul, he's an attorney trying to clear the name of a young woman (ex-porn star Ginger Lynn Allen) accused of being a member of a murderous devil-worshiping cult. Hauser, who tries his damnedest not to look embarrassed, should be grateful he's not the one stuck with lines like ''I think she already knows too much already.''

In Between is odder still: A hybrid of Luis Bunuel's The Exterminating Angel and Albert Brooks' Defending Your Life, it stars Hauser as a self- centered jerk who awakens in a locked Los Angeles house (actually purgatory) with two female strangers and is visited by a grim reaper named Vinnie. It's nice to see Hauser in a non-genre role for a change, but this almost unwatchable talkathon is all long takes, shaky hand-held cameras, and insipid dialogue. And the funny thing is, it isn't played for laughs. D
