Blackmail

Hitchcock's first talkie, Blackmail, links hypnotic montages with tedious chat as a Scotland Yard lug shields his girlfriend from a murder rap. Bits of sonic brilliance stand out, like the word knife suddenly making the culprit jump; too bad there's nothing that sharp on the disc's alternate audio track, featuring 92-year-old screenwriter Charles Bennett.
