Book Review

Hello Darling, Are You Working? (1992)

EW's GRADE
C+

Details Writer: Rupert Everett; Genres: Drama, Fiction; Publisher: Morrow

Perhaps film star Rupert Everett (The Comfort of Strangers, Another Country, Dance With a Stranger) should keep his day job. Rhys Waveral — child of Scottish gentry, out-of-work soap actor, sometime hooker, and hero of Everett's first novel — is a charmingly campy figure. Hello Darling, Are You Working?, though, has all the airiness of a comedy of manners with none of the sting. As measured by Waveral's less-than-explosive epiphany — ''while he did not even know who he himself was in this cheap story he had written, he knew that he too was lost'' — the adventures of the rich and jaded can be as irrelevant as anyone else's. C+
