49 LORNE MICHAELS
Creator, executive producer, Saturday Night Live
Rank last year: 83 Age: 47 Why he's up: After 17 seasons, Michaels
took Saturday Night Live to the movies last spring. The result,
Wayne's World, grossed $131 million, spawned a best-selling book and
soundtrack, and turned SNL into a golden goose for Paramount. Add in
20 million weekly viewers for the show and big ratings for its
ready-for-prime-time specials last season, and 1992 only enhanced his
status as Mr. Saturday Night. Next big moves: More films look for
Wayne's World II and The Coneheads next year.
50 MIKE MEDAVOY
Chairman, TriStar Pictures
Rank last year: In flux Age: 51 High point: Basic Instinct, which
TriStar distributed, grossed $117 million. Low point: The 800-theater
release of Husbands and Wives, meant to capitalize on Woody Allen's
scandal, bombed. Next big moves: The studio ordered up Jonathan
Demme's AIDS drama for '93 and signed a production deal with Robin
Williams. X factor: Though the $60 million Hook grossed nearly $300
million worldwide, the '92 lineup has been thin, triggering rumors
that Medavoy's boss, Peter Guber, may be losing patience.
